One of my most dearly revered professors had me on the edge of my seat one class when she was talking about calendar time. I honestly felt completely conflicted within myself, feeling uncertain and confused with the two polar opposite extremes.īut then I had a professor who gave me some perspective that I’ll never forget. Let’s just say no one dared ask for one in their classroom. Well, maybe they would have been a little more understanding. If you were caught with a calendar, you would be beheaded by lunch… On the opposite spectrum, I worked for an organization where calendar time was taboo. These findings change our understanding of Fibonacci spirals in land plants. Matt Humpage/Northern Rogue Studios, CC BY-NC-ND Distinct evolutionary history Life reconstruction of fossil Asteroxylon mackiei. The discovery of non-Fibonacci spirals in such an early fossil is surprising as they are very rare in living plant species today. In fact, non-Fibonacci spirals were the most common arrangement. We took images of thin slices of fossils and then used digital reconstruction techniques to visualise the arrangement of Asteroxylon mackiei’s leaves in 3D and quantify the spirals.īased on this analysis, we discovered that leaf arrangement was highly variable in Asteroxylon mackiei. The fossils we studied are now housed in museum collections in the UK and Germany but were originally collected from the Rhynie chert – a fossil site in northern Scotland. Specifically, we studied plant fossils of the extinct clubmoss species Asteroxylon mackiei. We examined the arrangement of leaves and reproductive structures in the first group of plants known to have developed leaves, called clubmosses. Sandy Hetherington, Author provided Non-Fibonacci spirals in early plants From left to right: spirals in leaves of a monkey puzzle trees, a pine cone and in the flower of a seaside daisy. Now count the number of clockwise and anticlockwise spirals, and in almost every case the number of spirals will be integers in the Fibonacci sequence.Įxamples of living plants with Fibonacci spirals. But look closely and you can see both clockwise and anticlockwise spirals. If you pick up a pinecone and look at the base, you can see the woody scales form spirals that converge towards the point of attachment with the branch.Īt first, you may only spot spirals in one direction. These patterns are particularly widespread in plants and can even be recognised with the naked eye. In most cases, these spirals relate to the Fibonacci sequence – a set of numbers where each is the sum of the two numbers that precede it (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21 and so on). Spirals occur frequently in nature and can be seen in plant leaves, animal shells and even in the double helix of our DNA. Luisa-Marie Dickenmann/University of Edinburgh, CC BY-NC-ND What are Fibonacci spirals? In trees, the Fibonacci begins in the growth of the trunk and then spirals outward as the tree gets larger and taller.Holly-Anne Turner, first author of the study, creating digital 3D models of Asteroxylon mackiei at the University of Edinburgh. Trees Photo from Joel & Jasmin Førestbird/UnsplashĪlthough we all usually see trees everywhere in our day to day, how often do we really look at them for patterns. When analyzing these spirals, the number is almost always Fibonacci. At points, their seed heads get so packed that their number can get exceptionally high, sometimes as much as 144 and more. A perfect example of this is sunflowers with their spiraling patterns. ![]() Most of the time, seeds come from the center and migrate out. Seed Heads Photo from Asgeir Pall Juliusson/UnsplashĪ flower’s head is also where you’ll find the Fibonacci sequence in plants. Of the most visible Fibonacci sequence in plants, lilies, which have three petals, and buttercups, with their five petals, are some of the most easily recognized. The petals of a flower grow in a manner consistent with the Fibonacci. Flower Petals Photo from Alfiano Sutianto/Unsplash ![]() Each cone has its own set of spirals moving outwards in opposing directions. When looking closely at the seed pod of a pinecone, you’ll notice an arranged spiral pattern. Pinecones Photo from Cameron Oxley/Unsplash ![]() The more they grow outward, the higher the Fibonacci sequence is visible. When growing off the branch, Fibonacci can be viewed in their stems as well as their veins. The Fibonacci sequence in plants is quite abundant, and leaves are one of the best examples. Although the Fibonacci sequence (aka Golden Ratio) doesn’t appear in every facet of known structures, it does in many, and this is especially true for plants. The Fibonacci sequence’s ratios and patterns (phi=1.61803…) are evident from micro to macro scales all over our known universe. The Fibonacci sequence was initially developed by Leonardo Fibonacci while he was calculating the expansion of groups of rabbits over a year. ![]() It is integrated into a system and manages a single function by deciphering data received and taking appropriate actions. Despite being tiny computers built into a single chip, they have programmable input/output peripherals, memory, and a processing core. This seemed to be a foolproof way to get data from each device.Microcontrollers have the power to control a wide variety of machines, including life-support systems, spacecraft, aircraft, and even mobile phones. When flipping any SS to high, also flip 53 to high. The solution, then, is to use different pins as SS lines (on a port register that actually works) for each daisy-chained device and when flipping their SS low, also flip 53 low even though nothing is connected to it. My theory is that in the Mega, MISO (and maybe MOSI–I wasn’t using a device that needed that line) is inextricably linked somehow with SS on pin 53, and traffic can only be received on MISO if SS also transitions to low. If neither device is on 53, then neither of their SS lines when transitioned will initiate anything over MISO.If you transition 53 to low at the same time, you’ll get traffic, but it will just be a collision. If one device is on 53 and another is on 49 (or any other number), you can contact the one on 53, but will receive nothing on MISO when transitioning 49 to low.I don’t recall ever having this issue on the Uno, but on the Mega, MISO only seems to become available if pin 53 (the SS it knows) transitions to low. Put simply, you can’t use it if you ever want more than one SPI device. But that’s not the most vexing issue you’d have to debug. Just get ready for this to begin with–where you want that SS line may not be where you get that SS line. Where is PORTL?Īs Hao Jiang found in this post about Arduino Mega port mapping, not all ports on the Mega even seem to respond to changes in their respective registers, so unless you’re okay with using pinMode() and digitalWrite() in your SPI code, the SS options are preemptively limited. You’ll need to use an additional pin as an extra SS line, and that pin may not be on the same port. If you’re daisy chaining SPI devices, there’s only one pin 53. This keeps everything cleanly on the same register, but with SPI it may not always work out that way. On the Mega, MOSI (pin 51) is PORTB 2, MISO (pin 50) is PORTB 3, SCK (pin 52) is PORTB 1, and SS (pin 53) is PORTB 0. It follows then that I/O standards on the Arduino are usually grouped into a single port, which is the case on both the Uno and the Mega. Set bit 0 on register PORTB (port pins, port B) Set bit 0 on register DDRB (direction, port B) If you were to want to rapidly switch pin 0 on PORTB on, you would initially set its direction bit high to make it an output, then set its port bit high to bring its voltage high. The pins on the Arduino are divided into ports logically, such as PORTA, PORTB, etc., which can be seen nicely in this diagram. Many SPI devices will use cbi() and sbi() functions to clear and set bits directly on port registers of the Arduino, which has a number of advantages like resulting in smaller code, much faster switching, and the ability to switch multiple pins at the same time. It turns out that CS on 53 is actually more important than you might think when doing daisy chaining, but more on that in a moment. ![]() ![]() Pull the CS low, then read from MISO, no problems at all. If you attach the bus to pins 51, 50, and 52, then run a chip select (also called slave select, CS, or SS) line to the provided pin 53, this seems to function with no issues. Interestingly, SPI does seem to work fine on the Mega in test cases. While MOSI, MISO, and SCK are on pins 11, 12, and 13 respectively on the Uno, those change to 51, 50, and 52 on the Mega. I initially daisy chained two LTC2400 analog-to-digital modules onto the SPI bus, just like I had them on the Uno, but immediately ran into issues. In theory these devices should handle SPI in the same manner, just with different pins. While working on a new revision of a project, I moved from an Arduino Uno to an Arduino Mega.

Although the band only released four more albums, the logo itself has become a timeless entity in pop culture. That part of the logo was directly inspired by William Rimmer's 19th century work Evening (Fall of Day). However, an original logo which had appeared within the album Houses of the Holy, came attached with their "Swan Song" logo. Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis fame (who were also responsible for Pink Floyd's most iconic imagery) were the individuals behind the logo, which made it's first initial appearance in 1973.Īt times the typography of the logo has appeared an entity in itself. However, it was at least five years into the group's existence when the now-ubiquitous typeface logo was unveiled. The voice of Robert Plant and the superior guitar work of Jimmy Page helped the band stand out with ease amidst a sea of imitators. Led Zeppelin is considered as rock elite as it gets when it comes to their discography. Perhaps no takes were more popular-or offensive-than their 1977 release of "God Save The Queen" which featured the band's riff on the Silver Jubilee portrait.ĭesigners: Storm Thorgerson, Aubrey Powell The logo would continue with the band throughout their brief existence in some form or another, including the garish pink/yellow scheme of their debut album. ![]() ![]() Simple and minimalist, the logo was the perfect accompaniment to the band's rebellious image and raw sound. The logo's first appearance to the masses came that fall, when Jamie Reid (another friend of McLaren) created promotional posters for the bands debut single "Anarchy In The U.K." Helen Wellington-Lloyd, a friend of the bands manager, Malcolm McLaren, created the logo in 1976. The image of the band was reflected within their simple logo, of cut-out, ransom note style letters. The band, home to such miscreants as Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious, weren't exactly polite or pleasant. If The Who's logo stood as a celebration of the band's English heritage, then the Sex Pistols' served as an equally well-executed desecration of it. The eight-pronged asterisk stands as a focal point, which is completely surrounded by the bands lengthy name which appears clockwise and without spaces. ![]() Some fans of the Los Angeles band have also posed the idea of the design symbolizing an "angel's asshole." However, Kiedis stated in his book Scar Tissue that the logo was something he just came up with when the label asked for a logo to use in promotion of their first album. On many different occasions, the symbol has been often associated with the "Star of Affinity," which refers to chaos. And it was during the groups prep-time for their self-titled debut where they came up with their classic logo.įrontman Anthony Kiedis has been credited as the artist behind the asterisk-style logo. Maybe it's because the bands formation actually took place when they were still in high school, as the four founding members all attended L.A.'s Fairfax High School. The Red Hot Chili Peppers may have been founded in the mid-'80s, but they still have one of the strongest cult followings of today's generation. Most notably, the lettering features an arrow, which appears atop the letter "o" of the bands name, creating the gender symbol for male (and also indicating their meteoric rise to come). The custom font used by the band was created by fellow Englishman Brian Pike in 1964. Their logo is as simple as it gets-the Royal Air Force's target-style logo, overlaid with the band's name in black. The Who logo, a classic and clean look, has an underlying meaning of masculinity, while embracing their British identity. Long before The Who sold 100 million records worldwide, they were just another blues-based band seeking an identity during the early stages of rock & roll branding. The group had the theatrical Roger Daltrey at the helm as lead vocalist, backed by guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle and a madman named Keith Moon on drums. The Who made their presence felt among their fellow rock peers of the '60s and '70s primarily by playing louder than anyone else. |
